Fontem Asabatong Njifua II, the Fon of Fontem, has issued an appeal to former students of Government High School Fontem, urging them to mobilise support for the reopening and rehabilitation of the school amid persistent challenges.

In a statement addressed to the school’s ex-students association, His Royal Majesty described G.H.S. Fontem as a foundational institution whose contribution to education and social cohesion in the area spans generations. He warned that the difficulties confronting the school risk undermining access to secondary education for children of the community if urgent action is not taken.

Calling on alumni at home and abroad, the Fon of Lebang stressed the importance of collective responsibility, noting that community-led efforts have proven effective in sustaining schools facing similar constraints. He cited initiatives by former students of Our Lady Seat of Wisdom College, Fontem and the ongoing mobilisation by alumni of Government Bilingual High School Fontem as examples of what unity and commitment can achieve.

According to the appeal, priority areas for intervention include clearing and improving the school environment, renovating classrooms and essential facilities, supporting teachers who have continued to serve despite limited resources, and encouraging students who still depend on the institution for their education.

The Fon also acknowledged the efforts of the school administration, commending Principal Nkemnji Ferdinand for maintaining the institution under difficult circumstances. He said such dedication should be matched by practical support from former students and stakeholders.

While recognising that the maintenance and staffing of public secondary schools remain the responsibility of the state, His Royal Majesty appealed to alumni to make interim contributions while awaiting government intervention.

He further praised the Azi Area Cultural Development Organization (AACDO) for its role in sustaining the school, including paying some teachers, providing teaching materials and overseeing the upkeep of the temporary site currently hosting the college.

The appeal concluded with a call for unity and shared purpose, with the Fon of Lebang expressing confidence that former students would act to preserve the legacy and future of their alma mater.
