Wabane Council Announces Major Infrastructure Relaunch Under World Bank Fund

The Mayor of Wabane has signaled a renewed commitment to local development, issuing a series of "emergency procedure" tenders to address critical gaps in education, water, and commerce. The projects are largely supported by the Local Governance and Resilient Communities Project (PROLOG), a World Bank-funded initiative designed to strengthen decentralization and socioeconomic resilience in Cameroon.

A Push for Educational Stability Two significant educational projects have been re-tendered this week. The Council is seeking providers for the construction and equipping of two classrooms at GS Marita, which includes the supply of 60 benches. Additionally, a separate emergency call has been issued for the supply of 110 benches at GS Bahne-Banteng. Local officials emphasized that these projects are vital to accommodate the growing student population in these remote agrarian communities.

Restoring Vital Water Schemes Water security remains a top priority for the municipality. The Council has relaunched requests for the upgrading of the Nkong and Bangang water supply schemes. These upgrades are seen as essential for improving public health and supporting the sub-division's large agricultural sector, which accounts for nearly 95% of its production capacity.

Market Modernization and Energy To facilitate trade, the Mayor has authorized the construction of 10 lock-up sheds in Magha Market and 5 lock-up stores in Babong Market. Connectivity is also being addressed through a new electrification project: the supply and installation of nine solar street lamps, five of which will line the critical Mbecho-Alonkong stretch of road, a route often cited for its difficult terrain.

EMERGENCY UPGRADE: World Bank-Backed "PROLOG" Targets Cameroon's Remote Breadbasket

WABANE, CAMEROON — In an "emergency procedure" move, the Wabane Council has relaunched nearly a dozen infrastructure bids, tapping into multimillion-dollar international credits to transform one of West Africa’s most isolated agricultural hubs.

  • World Bank Funding: Projects powered by IDA Credit N°72130-CM.

  • Economic Hubs: New lock-up stores to be built in Magha and Babong Markets.

  • Green Energy: Solar street lighting to illuminate the Mbecho-Alonkong road.

The Resilience Fund The projects fall under the Performance-Based Grant Agreement of the PROLOG project. This World Bank-funded initiative is specifically targeting "resilient communities," aiming to provide climate-resilient infrastructure in regions affected by fragility and conflict. In Wabane, this means more than just buildings; it’s about creating a sustainable economic environment for the "Mundani" people.

Market and Power Blitz The Council is moving fast to secure contractors for:

  • Solar Security: 09 solar street lamps to be installed around Council offices and key road stretches.

  • Commercial Growth: 15 new lock-up stores across Magha and Babong Markets to prevent post-harvest losses.

  • Classroom Capacity: Urgent supply of over 170 school benches and new classroom blocks to GS Marita.

Agricultural Impact Known as a regional breadbasket, Wabane’s development has long been hindered by its "enclaved" nature. By upgrading the Nkong and Bangang water systems and improving market infrastructure, the PROLOG project aims to turn this agrarian giant into a modern economic hub, linking its produce to wider markets in Nigeria and beyond
