FONTEM, Lebialem Division (Southwest Region) — After years of silence and neglect brought on by the armed conflict in Cameroon’s Anglophone regions, Government High School (GHS) Fontem — widely known locally as “Mbang” — is on the path to renewal.

The institution, once a key center of secondary education for students across Fontem and its surrounding villages, had fallen into disrepair during the height of the crisis. Vegetation overtook school grounds, buildings deteriorated, and learning facilities were left exposed and unusable.

Now, a determined community-led effort is reversing that narrative.

Traditional Leadership at the Forefront

The revival campaign is being coordinated under the guidance of His Majesty, the Fon of Fontem, following a formal request from the school’s principal, Mr. Ferdinand Nkemji. Responding to the call to action, the traditional ruler mobilized community stakeholders to begin a large-scale clearing and rehabilitation exercise.

Several respected community figures have contributed financial and logistical support to the project, including Nkem Tanyi Robert Fondi, Ndi Nkem Atema, Ndi Nkem Leke of Mankem, Mafua Akeahbin, and Pa Fondi. Oversight of the ongoing work has been credited to Nkem Etiendem Kungang, whose supervision has ensured steady progress.

Residents describe the intervention not simply as a cleanup operation, but as a strategic investment in the area’s future. For many, restoring the school symbolizes a return to stability and a renewed commitment to youth development.

Education as a Foundation for Recovery

Beyond physical repairs, community leaders emphasize that reopening and strengthening educational institutions is central to rebuilding trust and promoting peace in post-conflict settings. The Fon has issued a public appeal to former students and well-wishers, urging them to support the rehabilitation through donations, materials, or voluntary service.

According to local leaders, the objective extends beyond reconstructing classrooms. It is about rebuilding opportunity, reestablishing normalcy, and ensuring that children in the Lebialem Division regain access to quality education.

As work continues on the campus, optimism is growing that GHS Fontem’s restoration could serve as a broader model for community-driven recovery across affected regions.
